Palermo, who had previously only lost once at home this season, were undone when substitute Morata curled home.

The Spanish striker broke the deadlock just 10 minutes after coming on to replace compatriot Fernando Llorente.

Second-placed Roma can narrow the gap on Juve, who are chasing a fourth successive league title, when they host Sampdoria on Monday.

Juve, who were without key midfielders Paul Pogba and Andrea Pirlo through suspension and injury respectively, next play on Wednesday when they face German club Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League last-16 second leg.

Massimiliano Allegri's side have a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Turin.

In Saturday's other Serie A match, Zdenek Zeman was denied victory on his return as coach of relegation-threatened Cagliari.

Matias Vecino scored 37 seconds from the end of injury time to secure a 1-1 draw for Empoli.

Joao Pedro's first-half goal looked set to end a six-match winless league run for Cagliari, who are three points from a position of safety.

Zeman, dismissed in December, was reappointed after his successor Gianfranco Zola was sacked on Monday.
