AFRICAN U17 CHAMPIONSHIP: IVORY COAST HELD BY SOUTH AFRICA, MALI WHIPS CAMEROON

Defending champions Cote d'Ivoire rallied from two goals down to rescue a point as they drew 2-2 with South Africa in a thrilling Group B clash of the CAF U17 championship at the Stade Municipal in Niamey.

The duel between South Africa and Cote d' ivoire
Amajimbos made a good start to this fixture as two beautiful 'tap-ins' by Ntuthuko Mbatha after 23minutes and Eric Mayo on the hour mark gave South Africa a precious lead. The Amajimbos were seemingly in cruise control and could have further extended their lead in the 73rd and 80thminutes but Mayo could not convert two glorious chances with only the keeper at his mercy.

Defender Koffi Kouao gave the holders a lifeline with a quarter hour remaining before full time; his long range speculative effort hit the post before rolling past goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto.

With eight minutes on the clock, Idrissa Doumbia tapped in from a corner to level matters at a packed Municipal.

In the other group B match of the day, Mali defeated Cameroon 3-1 to go top of the group.

Mali took early control of Group B with a hard fought 3-1 win over Cameroon in a keenly contested encounter at the Stade Municipal in the second of Monday's double-header at the CAFU17 finals in Niamey.

The two sides engaged in a fast-paced tussle from start to finish and the half-time deadlock was only broken on 49minutes when Mamadou Sangare volleyed home to give Mali the lead. Sidiki Maiga went close nine minutes later but Cameroon goal minder Cedric Tchotcheu saved well.

Cameroon skipper Martin Hongla restored parity on the hour mark as the two sides exhibited thrilling end-top-end tough action before a vociferous packed arena.

Mali went ahead with 12 minutes remaining on the clock when Sekou Koita thundered home from close range and the young eagles made sure of maximum points right on the stroke of full time when enterprising Boubacar Traore rounded goalie Tchotcheu to slot home.

With the win, Mali assumed early leadership of group B which earlier saw defending champions Cote d'Ivoire come from two goals to draw with South Africa's Amajimbos 2-2.
