FLETCHER OFF TO WEST BROM

Darren Fletcher has ended his 20-year association with Manchester United to join West Bromwich Albion.

The midfielder, who was appointed United's vice-captain in the summer, has signed a two-and-a-half-year transfer deal with an option for an additional 12 months at the Hawthorns.
Fletcher's contract at Old Trafford was due to expire in the summer and United agreed to let him leave on a free transfer as recognition for his service.

"It feels great. This is a fantastic new challenge for me in my career," Fletcher told West Brom's official website. "I've spent my career at Manchester United and it's all I've ever known."

"But I felt it was the right time to move and I'm not sentimental about doing that -- I have great memories obviously, but I'm now a West Bromwich Albion player and I cannot wait to get going.

"Everyone involved in making the deal happen has been fantastic. And a big reason I'm here is because of the head coach.

"He has impressed me from the first minute. When someone shows how much they want you it's a great feeling."

The Scotland international nearly joined West Ham before a move broke down at the weekend, when United manager Louis van Gaal accused the London club of moving the goalposts by trying to take him on loan, rather than a permanent transfer.

Fletcher, 31, joined United's ranks as a youth team player at the age of 11 and made 342 appearances in the 12 years since debuting.

But despite being made Wayne Rooney's deputy by Van Gaal in the summer, he only started four league games this season and just one since August.

The Scotland captain, who barely featured in a two-and-a-half year period because of ulcerative colitis, played his last United game against Yeovil in the FA Cup third round.

United made a solitary signing in the January transfer window, recruiting goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer, but saw several players leave.

Centre-back Michael Keane completed a 3 million-pound move to Burnley, while Wilfried Zaha joined Crystal Palace and Anderson was tying up a move to Internacional of Brazil. Jesse Lingard joined Derby on loan.

They also secred the services of young defender Andy Kellett on loan from Bolton, with Saidy Janko going the other way until the season's end.
