In a 3-hour, 32-minute minute match filled with mind-bending shots from both players, Murray came back from 2-5 down in the fourth set to close out the match and reach his 16th straight Grand Slam quarter-final.

Dimitrov, the 23-year-old Bulgarian who is seen as one of the future stars of men's tennis, received a standing ovation from the crowd at Rod Laver Arena.

A three-time Australian Open runner-up, Murray now faces Australia's teen star Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, the 19-year-old Kyrgios came back from two sets down and saved a match point to beat Andreas Seppi 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 8-6, becoming the first Australian man to reach the last eight in the national championship since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005, and the first male teenager since Federer in 2001 to reach two Grand Slam quarter-finals
